Only 20 minutes by car from the Agriturismo Martelletto, within the Natural Park of Gola della Rossa and Frasassi, you can visit the largest spectacle of nature in the whole of Italy.
Formed 190 million years ago, the Frasassi Caves are a karstic formation that develops for more than 30 kilometers in the bowels of the earth and of these only a kilometer and a half can be visited by the public.
Discovered in 1971 by the Ancona Speleological Group of CAI, they have been open to the public (in part) since 1974 and since then they have been the main tourist attraction in the Marche region. Open all year round (for timetables and info www.frasassi.com) the ticket for the tourist route (lasting about 1 hour and 15 minutes) costs € 18 and comfortable clothing and sneakers are recommended. For the more adventurous it is also possible to do the speleo route lasting about two hours, but for which it is necessary to book.
The constant temperature at 14 degrees and a percentage of 100% humidity have meant that the slow action of water created unique geological formations in the world: stalactites and stalagmites of gigantic size and shapes that seem to have been created by the greatest sculptor (the Giants and the Fetta di Pancetta only to name two); environments (such as the Infinite Room, Ancona Abyss Hall or the Sala delle Candeline) so large they lose their sense of proportion and size.
A maze of cavities and tunnels that were recently also told by Alberto Angela in her program Meraviglie, broadcast on Rai1.
Once the tour of the Caves is over, a visit to the Temple of Valadier and the Hermitage of Santa Maria infra Saxa, as well as the small villages of Genga (Orange Flag and the most beautiful village in Italy) and San Vittore alle Chiuse are unmissable.
