Serra San Quirico is a marvelous testimony of medieval architecture that rises on the west side of the Esino river, from which Vallesina, on the edge of the Natural Park of the Gola della Rossa, and just under 50 km from the sea of Ancona.
The town, at the foot of Mount Murano, has the characteristic shape of a galley, surrounded by a wall complex that can be walked through thanks to its covered walkways called “Copertelle“.
Like any self-respecting village, it develops all around its central square (Piazza della Libertà) characterized by an evocative fifteenth-century stone fountain.
The town hall with its 13th century tower, the Manin loggia (a real balcony over the valley) and the Piccioni, Ortolani and della Meridiana palaces overlook the square.
From the square there are a series of alleys and alleys, paved with sandstone, that reach up to the highest point of the village where the suggestive Torre del Cassero rises and from which it is possible to enjoy a priceless view.
A noteworthy note should be given to the church of Santa Lucia (perhaps the highest example of sixteenth-century Baroque in the Marche region) with its monumental complex that houses both the Historical Cartoteca of the Marche and the headquarters of the Natural Park of the Gola della Rossa.
Once the tour of the village is over, one piece of advice I can give you is to visit two abbeys of the early 1000s (Sant’Elena and Sant’Urbano) … and then come and visit us either to taste the recipes of our kitchen, or to stop you to sleep and start from here to discover the thousand other attractions that surround us (see other blog posts).
